SOUTHERN SHAN STATE HILLTRIBES

Destination : Pindaya/Kalaw/Inle

Day 1 – Heho-Pindaya-Kalaw

After arrival at Heho airport continue to Pindaya, a quiet but beautiful small town famous for its sacred cave, which houses 8095 Buddha shrines of different sizes placed over many centuries. Also visit the paper parasol cottage industries of the native Danu tribe, where you can see the whole parasol-making process. The parasols are made from strong, thick Shan Paper and other local products. In the late evening leave for Kalaw.

Day 2 – Kalaw

Surrounded by mountains, Kalaw is a peaceful summer resort with meandering streams and fragrant pine woods. There are Palaung villages situated nearby and some hilltribe people in colourful traditional dress can be seen at Kalaw Market. Trekking excursions to the villages atop the nearby hills can be arranged, if desired, at extra cost. Highlights include the panoramic beauty of the cool highlands, the tobacco and tea leaf plantations 1200 metres above sea level and the traditional long houses (each one inhabited by eight to nine families) of the Palaung tribes.

Day 3 – Kalaw-Inle Lake

After breakfast, continue by car to the old capital of Shan State, Nyaung Shwe by car (about two hours). Then take a boat from the jetty for sightseeing on the lake. Visit the silk weaving factory at Inn Paw Khone village, cheroot making workshops at Nan Pan village and view the floating gardens and the unique leg rowing method used by Inn Thar fishermen.

Day 4 – Inle Lake

After breakfast set out for Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, the most sacred Buddhist shrine in Shan State. If it’s a market day, you’ll have the chance to see colourful hill tribe people selling their wares. Enjoy shopping for souvenirs, or just browsing at the many stores built under the pagoda. Visit the famous Nge Phe Chaung monastery, better known as the Jumping Cats Monastery, famous not only for its magnificent teak building and exquisite antiques but also the dozens of cats that have been trained by the monks to jump through rings and hoops. Visit a weaving factory where you can observe the weaving of lotus threads into monk’s robes followed by an antique shop and restaurant.

Day 5 – Inle Lake-Sakar

After breakfast, continue by car to the old capital of Shan State, Nyaung Shwe by car (about two hours). Then take a boat from the jetty for sightseeing on the lake. Day 6 – Inle Lake-Indein-Inle Lake

Indein-Trekking (easy/soft trekking for all ages)
After breakfast take a fascinating boat ride to Indein village along Indein creek (one hour). On arrival explore the Indein Pagoda complex, featuring hundreds of Shan-style stupas dating back to the 16th century. Next, an hour’s easy trekking to the Peacock Hill, the highest peak on the western range. Once at the peak, enjoy the panoramic view of the southern watershed area and the empty hills to the west, with a picnic-style packed lunch provided en-route. Trekking to this spot is rewarding as it combines historical monuments, natural surroundings and the way of life of the local Pa-O people). Return to your hotel in the evening.

All airlines operate flights each day from Yangon, Bagan and Mandalay to Heho.
