Destinations – Yangon/Pyay/Yangon

Day 1 – Yangon

After breakfast proceed for sightseeing, including the old colonial-style city centre and the 2000-year-old Sule Pagoda, often described as the heart of Yangon. View Yangon’s waterfront, including Botahtaung Pagoda and the legendary Strand Hotel. Return to your hotel. Organise your own dinner or head to Karaweik Hall, a royal barge on Kandawgyi Lake, for a buffet dinner and cultural show with full Myanmar orchestra.

Day 2 – Yangon

Your full day of sightseeing in Yangon commences with a visit to the glittering Shwedagon Pagoda (believed to be built 2600 years ago during the Buddha’s life time), with its amazing mix of pavilions, stupas, images and bells. This golden pagoda rises 98 meters above its base, is covered with 60 tonnes of pure gold and is one of the world’s most spectacular religious monuments. Proceed to the sprawling Bogyoke Aung San Market, also known as Scott Market, with its abundance of shops selling gems and jewelry, lacquer ware, wood carvings, silverware, paintings and other handicrafts.

Day 3 – Yangon-Pyay

After breakfast leave for Pyay. On the way stop at Shwetaung, a small town about 270 km north-west of Yangon and only 15 km south of Pyay. It was once a part of the Thayekhittaya (Sri Ksetra) kingdom and lies between the Yangon-Pyay Highway and the mighty Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River. Shwetaung has two famous pagodas: the Shwemyettman Pagoda (“Pagoda of Golden Spectacles”) and Shwenattaung Pagoda (“Pagoda of the Golden Spirit Mountain). Arrive at Pyay and check in to your hotel.
In the late afternoon proceed for sightseeing to the ancient capital of the Pyu Kingdom that flourished between the 5th and 9th century known as Thayekhittaya (Sri Ksetra). The ruins are hidden behind thick thorny bushes, small trees, toddy palms, cactus and beautiful white flowers. Visit the ruins are of Patagyi Pagoda, Payama Pagoda, Bawbawgyi Pagoda and Bebe Pagoda. The small museum has a collection of artifacts collected from archaeological excavations, including royal funerary urns, stone relief, Buddhist and Hindu images, and silver coins minted in the kingdom.

Day-4 Pyay-Akauk Hill-Pyay

On the other side of the Ayeyarwady River from Pyay lies the Akauk Taung hill range. In the 19th century, because of the British annexation of Lower Myanmar, the country was split into Upper (ruled by the Myanmar king) and Lower (ruled by the British) sections. The river was the major transportation route for trade between the two parts and Akauk was a place where all the boats stopped and were checked for trading taxes. The hills are full of Buddha Images that are thought to have been created by the traders when they berthed.
