Lost City of Mrauk U

An adventure to the former Rakhine capital of Mrauk U will see you fly from Yangon to Sittwe, from where you will take a chartered local boat upriver for five to seven hours, depending on the current.
For almost four centuries to 1785 Mrauk U was the royal capital of the independent Rakhine kingdom. It is famous for its many pagodas and temples, which are scattered throughout the area around modern Mrauk U, a small town. The most famous is Shitthaung Pagoda, or the “Temple of the 80,000 Buddhas”..
Day 1 – Yangon – Sittwe – Mrauk U
After arriving at Sittwe transfer to the jetty for a chartered local boat trip on the Kaladan River to Mrauk U, about five hours upstream. Arrive in Mrauk U around midday. Explore some of the town. Back in its 15th century heyday, Mrauk U was one of the richest cities in all of Asia but today the town is more like a sleepy village.

Day 2 – Mrauk U
Enjoy sunrise over the misty hills of Mrauk U from the top of a hill near your hotel. After breakfast, continue sightseeing in Mrauk U with a visit to the market, the ruins of the Royal Palace and the Archaeological Museum. After lunch, visit Shitthaung Temple, Mrauk U’s most important monument, built in 1535 and containing a remarkable collection of Rakhine Buddha images and reliefs. Continue to the multi-spire Andawthein Ordination Hall, with its unique stone carvings; the circular Ratanabon Pagoda; Dukkhanthein, a huge fortress-like temple with vaulted passages containing interesting stone sculptures; and Laymyetnha, the first pagoda erected in Mrauk U, in 1430.

Day 3 – Mrauk U- Sittwe
After breakfast tour Mrauk U, including Koethaing Temple, the Pitakataik Library, and Laungbanpyauk, Yadana Mannaung and Sakaya Mannaung pagodas. After lunch return to Sittwe, the capital of Rakhine State.
Overnight: Sittwe.
Day 4 – Sittwe-Yangon
After breakfast, take a city tour featuring the colourful fish market and the cultural museum, before taking your return flight to Yangon.
